We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. -Aristotle

Susan and I went to see Signs last night. I was really excited to go because M. Night Shyamalan is my favorite screenwriter/director. I love his paranormal topics and the perceptive yet subtle nature of his writing. He's wonderful at drawing out characters and exploring the motivations behind their actions. The imagery of his films is simplistic yet beautiful and he posseses a Hitchcockian sense of suspense. I didn't mean to go off on a tangent like that, but I really love this guy's work. I would love to find the two films he made before The Sixth Sense. I'm interested in seeing how he started out.

Anyway, Signs was just as excellent as I'd hoped it would be. The characters were interesting and well-acted. All the seemingly separate events connected in an eerie way, which is typical of Shyamalan's work. It also scared the crap out of me, which is always fun in a movie. If you haven't seen it, GO NOW! Signs and Road to Perdition are definately the best major studio releases out so far. I'm sure I'll be adding Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to that list by the end of the year.
